Fastest distinguishing feature for removed engines from non-SL: missing rev counter drive, saloon engine arms. Unfortunately, a list of assignments of the cast fuselage blank part numbers to later engine numbers is not available. The original SL condition includes this type arrangement: 230SL = 113.042 = engine M127.981, detection: 4-way crankshaft bearing, 6-piston injection pump (deviating from M127-220SEb two-piston); 250SL = 113.043 = M129.982 engine, detection: 7-way crankshaft bearing, pistons 82.00 to 83.00, oil-water heat exchanger; 280SL = 113.044 = engine M130.983, detection: pistons 86.50 to 87.50 Both sedan engines and replacement engines can be found in large numbers, including engines without a sticker. The catalogue pages 03.b (assignment of pistons) and 05+05.a (identification and assignment of the head gasket) serve as an aid in the event of an uncertain engine ID. Further changes (e.g. oil pan enlargement shown) took place in the current series (and/or as a result of replacements), so a prior review is advisable.
