Große Modelländerung 1985, offiziell per 01.08.1985, jedoch mit Abweichungen: 280/380SL alte Radaufhängung, 300/420SL neue Radaufhängung. 500SL spätestens ab FG 034907, in Vorserie einzelne FG auch früher. Nachrüstung möglich, sofern alle Teile (Lenker bis Naben) zusammen. Die Geometrie des zentralen Achsträgers (vom "Strich Acht" stammend) ist durchgängig unverändert, erhielt aber Verstärkungen während der 107-Bauzeit und kleine Änderungen bei 280-RHD.
Erkennungszeichen Radaufhängung "früh": Dreieckslenker komplett aus Stahlblech mit demontierbaren Kugelgelenken, die auch als Einzelteil erhältlich sind. Tausch des oberen Kugelgelenkes (Führungsgelenk einzeln) ist spezialisierten Werkstätten aufgrund der Vernietung möglich (MB verweist auf kompletten Lenker). Bremsscheibe innenseitig an der Radnabe. Für Felgen 6 1/2 x 14" ET30 oder 7 x 15" ET25 (SA11186/03).
Radaufhängung "spät": obere Lenker massiv, Kugelgelenk nicht austauschbar (Zerlegung herstellerseitig nicht vorgesehen). Untere Lenker und Radträger in Konstruktion und Geometrie geändert. Bremsscheibe außenseitig an der Radnabe. Für Felgen 7 x 15" ET25.
